About the Arc city pavilion

The Arc city pavilion

The first purpose-built structure of its kind in the country, the innovative design of the Arc pavilion reflects the geography and varied industries of Hull, whilst embracing a number of sustainable features.

An under-floor water heating system provides efficient background heat for the large open space; the cooling system is fed by a galvanised trough that collects rainwater at the foot of the sloping roof; a 'mechanical garden'
of wind turbines and photovoltaic panels installed on poles provide additional power with the help of a system of inverters.

The Arc pavilion was designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects and completed in 2006, was designed as a kit of parts with modular, off-site construction techniques reflecting the local caravan and modular building industry.

The pavilion does not have traditional foundations. Instead, the whole structure sits on a grid of pre-cast
concrete pads which sit straight onto the ground. The only connection to the ground is via services such as

waste, water and electricity.

The Arc city pavilion has received several awards:

Winner of both a RIBA Award and the RIBA White Award Rose Award in 2006, winner of the Yorkshire and Humber Region RIBA Client of the year Award in 2006, shortlisted for the RIBA National Sustainability Award in 2006, and winner of an AIA Commendation in 2006.

The city room

The Arc building is a learning resource in itself; a building that stimulates debate, provides an exciting venue for events and is a dynamic landmark in Hull's city centre.

As well as being a unique and stimulating venue for dynamic and participatory cultural programming, our innovative pavilion has become a gateway to the city's Fruit Market development site, and is a local landmark for adults and children who live in or visit the city.

We host exhibitions, seminars, lectures, conferences, debates and act as a venue for consultation and public engagement activities.

We deliver a lively public programme, with varied speakers such as Will Alsop, Janet Street Porter, Pru Leath, Ian McMillan, Irena Bauman and John Sorrell.
