Grounds For Optimism Logo

arc are very excited to announce the launch of this innovative landscape design award scheme aimed at secondary schools across Yorkshire and Humberside and South East England.

Grounds for Optimism is about engaging students in ‘Blue Skies’ thinking about their school grounds; taking them through a carefully planned process of analysis, exploration and consultation enabling them to create design solutions for their grounds. Grounds for Optimism is not just about transforming space; taking part will also transform learning.

For more information on how you can be involved and to register your school or landscape architecture practice go to:

The project has been developed by Solent Centre for Architecture + Design, and arc is pleased to be part of it!

In March 2008 Humber School’s Decision Makers and Design Teams wee invited to attend the arc Seminar for Schools ‘Shaping Our Place’ at the KC Stadium in Hull .

arc facilitated a discussion of the benefits of engaging pupils in the design processes, and the mechanisms for doing so.

The day was aimed at anyone involved in any schools capital projects, including landscape, (Governors, Extended Schools coordinators, Head Teachers, Building Managers, Local Authority design teams, lead teachers, Academy teams, BSF coordinators, etc).

how places work

In the Spring and Summer terms of 2007/08 arc delivered the CABE How Places Work programme to regional secondary schools.
Pupils went behind the scenes of a contemporary building with an Inspiring guide – the architect, the building manager or someone who simply loved the building.

“The visits were a real eye opener for the kids. They are still thrilled.”

Teacher, Vermuyden School.

buddy a building

In the Spring and Summer terms of 2007/08 arc invited local Primary Schools to ‘buddyabuilding’. Children learned about the historic and contemporary use of a neighbourhood building and become it’s closest friends! Teachers were supported in developing learning resources based on the built environment for experiential learning for subjects such as Geography, Design and Technology, History and Art. Pupils found out more about their community and took an active role in taking responsibility for it’s future.
