Public realm advisory service

We want to drive up standards of design in buildings and public places. Arc's public realm advisory service can be used by anyone who shares this ambition.

Public art can be expressed in a number of ways including:

figurative sculpture abstract sculpture			water features hard and soft landscape

lighting glazing			floorscape design text and image projection

seating railings			bollards murals

It can be temporary or permanent. It can be free-standing or it can be integrated with the work of other design professionals.

The public realm advisory service provides professional advice in the following areas:

1.	The formulation of strategies for public art provision which make appropriate responses to public art planning conditions imposed by local planning authorities.
2.	The type and style of artwork that is most suitable for inclusion in a building or public place: e.g. free-standing art objects or the integration of an artist's thinking into the design.
3.	The ways in which the costs of public art can be assessed and advice on sources of external funding.
4.	Contemporary artistic practice and the work of local, regional, national and international artists.
5.	Good practice in the commissioning process including appropriate methods of contracting with artists and rates of pay for artists that conform to guidelines applied by Arts Council and others.
6.	Making contact with experienced public art project managers.
