Beverley Road-ness
We have been working with English Heritage and local residents on a project focusing specifically on Beverley Road to identify the 'spirit of place' for the area, in order to build on the characterisation work already undertaken for Hull City Council. We have been focusing on the area between the city centre and Queen's Road.
We have been asking...
- Do you think that you can see Hullness on Beverley Road?
- Are there things that are distinctive or special to Beverley Road, compared with the rest of the City?
As part of this work, we:
- Conducted individual and group discussions with residents and organisations based on Beverley Road and
recorded their responses.
- Delivered sessions with local schools - working with Stepney Primary school and Endeavour High School.
This work resulted in some visual maps and responses which have been exhibited in the school, on our community bus exhibition and in local venues.
- Worked with students from Hull University and the Hull School of Architecture to undertake a detailed characterisation of the area.
- Created a new illustrative map of Beverley Road with artist Nicola Streeten - see below!
- Organised a one-day exhibition, held on a community bus outside Aldi car park on Beverley Road, on March 5. Over 80 people came and shared their memories, thoughts and reflections on the area as well as looking at the display and getting their copy of the map.
What do you think Beverley Road-ness is?
If you've got photos that you would like to share you can upload them to our flickr group - it's easy!
