exhibitions

The opening of arc in early 2006 provided Hull with a new venue for residents and visitors alike to come to learn about architecture in the broadest sense. We have welcomed a real variety of people at arc through a range of events for such varied organisations as Hull City Council, Citybuild, CABE, Arts and Business, Hull Civic Society, Society of Council and Local Authority Architects, The Civic Trust, Resound and ‘Stop the Trafficking’ Campaign as well as exhibitions such as the highly successful ‘Overheard’ exhibition by Resound, Clay City exhibition and the three day Sustainability Expo with exhibitors demonstrating and explaining aspects of sustainable technology utilising wind, solar and geothermal sources.

The Black Atlantic Project

pictures from opening night 26 july with Hull based choir Bora Shaba

DJs and turntablists on both sides of the Atlantic speak the same musical language - hip-hop - but in different dialects. StudioSound: The Black Atlantic Project, presented by The Studio Museum in Harlem and the British Council USA, is an innovative, collaborative sonic art project that explores black culture and music across two continents. Musicians and producers in the United States and Britain took turns interpreting and remixing an original composition, passing the results from artist to artist like a hip-hop chain letter.

The Black Atlantic Project is concerned with communication through music and a chance for a group of eclectic producers to work together on a common musical theme,” says Charlie Dark, the London-based sound artist, DJ, and writer who curated the project and composed the initial track, Naima’s Theme, for his newborn daughter. “It’s supposed to inspire and provoke conversations ... I don’t think that music exists without the social consequences and influences.’

Charlie Dark

Through the evolution of The Black Atlantic project, a simple composition honoring a child's birth became a commentary on cultural links across the Atlantic.

‘I don’t think you realize the power of hip-hop until you travel out of America,’ says Dark. “It’s … a huge global force.’

The Black Atlantic Project was installed in arc during July and August as part of Hull City Councils Wilberforce 2007 bicentennial celebrations and visitors had the chance to hear the final Charlie Dark remix and sample the collective work at each stage of its development through sound-isolating headphones.

june-july 2007

Over the past year, arc has hosted a series of free architect led evening lectures aimed at engaging the public and built environment professionals in quality architecture and built environment.

Our aim has been to invite architects who have worked in the Yorkshire region, therefore making their work more accessible to our audience and has over the course of one year seen 12 architects coming to Hull for the arc talks programme.

The architects were:

Peter Clegg - Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects LLP. May 2006

Sarah Wigglesworth - Sarah Wigglesworth Architects. May 2006

Niall McLaughlin - Niall McLaughlin Architects. June 2006

Irena Bauman - Bauman Lyons Architects. August 2006

Patrick Richard - Stanton Williams Architects. September 2006

Simon Hudspith - Panter Hudspith Architects. September 2006

John Pringle - Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects. November 2006

Will Alsop - SMC Alsop. January 2007

Ted Cullinan - Edward Cullinan Architects. February 2007

Susan Le Good - Allford Hal Monaghan Morris Architects. March 2007

Steven Clarke - Hopkins Architects. April 2007

Stafford Critchlow - Wilkinson Eyre Architects. May 2007

The 12 exhibition was a celebration of the end of this first highly successful year of the arc talks programme and also a celebration of all the wonderful architecture to be seen in the region featuring sites such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Magna and Fountains Abbey Visitor Centre. It highlighted the processes involved in creating great design and included visuals from the earliest sketches to final models, plans and drawings of the buildings in the region featured in the series.
