Introduction
arc is the architecture centre for Hull the Humber sub-region. We are one of 20 architecture centres in the UK, each sharing a common purpose of raising public, professional and local government understanding of architecture and public space. We do this through a variety of learning, skills activities and public events for adults and young people to raise aspirations and increase a sense of ownership of our buildings and spaces.
The arc building is the first purpose built centre of its kind in the country.
“A lean-to to learn from.”

The arc building is the home to our varied learning and event programme. Whilst much of what we do takes place out-and-about, we also need a base for offices and a space to host events, exhibitions and activities.
Importantly, the arc building is a learning resource in itself; a building that stimulates debate, provides an exciting venue for events and is a dynamic landmark in Hull’s city centre.
The concept for the arc building came through the interests of a steering group -community educationalists, residents, architects, designers and regional funding agencies - who developed the requirements and expectations of the new building.
The building had to be able to ‘go to the people’ and ‘invite the people in’ reflecting the geography and geology of Hull and the history of the city. The building should be comfortable to use and of a challenging and engaging design, utilising sustainable building techniques, including ‘green’ energy resources. The building needed to be practical and flexible for staff and visitors alike and a welcoming place to be.
Kingston-upon-Hull City Council generously granted arc a site at Blanket Row. This central location, in proximity to the regeneration zones of the Marina and Fruit Market is an ideal base but is ‘temporary’.
We aim to move the building to a new location in the future.
